Blasted by sun and sea and occasionally by cannon-fire during its 440-year history, the stone fortification known as the Fortezza still rises high and proud over the harbour of the romantic town of Rethymno. Having passed from Venetian to Ottoman hands before settling into a role as a tourist attraction, it is a visible reminder of the island’s past, that also provides great views and photo-fodder. This is one site that your will certainly want to check out, as it is located not too far from our hotel in Rethymno.
Western Crete is very rich in natural cave formations, owing to fault lines and natural geological features. The Rethymnon Region or prefecture has 850 caves and more are periodically found or uncovered accidentally, such as the Gerani Cave, which was revealed quite by accident in the course of excavation work for a highway in 1969. Here we ‘delve a little deeper’ into two very interesting and very different caves, both open to the public and within an easy drive from our hotel in Rethymno.
Rethymno is, for many people, the ideal mix of day and night time facilities that keeps them returning year after year. Lively, but not too frenetic, the nightlife here is somehow more elegant and refined than other popular resorts, such as Malia and Hersonissos. Happily, there are plenty of opportunities to drink, dance and socialise, quite close to hotel in Rethymno. Whether you prefer a quiet game of backgammon with a coffee, or want to taste some Raki, the local firewater and dance the night away, you will be spoilt for choice!
